LSNED and Daisy D's

Tomorrow is the start of Shimelle's (annual) September Learn Something New Everyday project.  Although I usually participate through my blog (and I plan to again), this year I am going to attempt to get it down on paper.  Just a photo and some words, a ribbon, a flower, a button or two.  September in Pennsylvania is the start of the fall season, the leaves will change, the evenings will get cooler, the acorns and buckeyes will fall from their branches, it's lovely, and these papers and embellishments from Daisy D's will be perfect! (Also, trying to use what I have and not buy anything more).

And speaking of stash, I hadn't realized how many kits I had accumulated over the past few years.  I've decided to buckle down and get a few made to hand out as Christmas presents.  I'm rather excited about it.

Back to the Basics

Met my Mom early this morning and followed her up to the Pittsburgh Mills so that I could drop off the car for an oil change at Sears.  The car is now good for another 3,000 miles.  We stopped in at J. C. Penney's to pick up a gift and checked out Borders "going out of business" sale and had breakfast at Eat n' Park.
Speaking of cars, K and I spotted this one on the Wharf last week.  It has eyelashes! It was so cute.

Back at the house we cleaned out the downstairs kitchen (slated to one day be a laundry room) and although the walls need painted (badly), and some plastering needs done and the sink needs replaced, the room is again functional and looking quite pretty.  Thanks Mom!

As for the sink, a contractor said that underneath is galvanized metal, most likely rusted and that it would have to be replaced.  Eventually.  So, for now, we got a board, covered it and will use it as a shelf.  They just don't make sinks like this anymore, do they?
Now, coffee percolators, I'm talking the old kind that you boiled coffee in right on the stove, they do still make.  Talked with a lovely and quite helpful salesperson (Maria) at J. C. Penney's who not only told me where to get one but also gave me a few tips about using an espresso maker if I opt to go that route. Did a search on the Internet and found a cute Paula Deen black 8 cup percolator on QVC.  Then hit upon Campmor.  Now, why didn't I think camping equipment in the first place?? Duh!
Pioneer 8 cup by GSI, found at Campmor
And I know, I know, with all the modern appliances out there, why go backwards? Why want to do more work?? I don't know, there is just something so quaint and charming about doing most of the work yourself and not relying on a machine.  And maybe it's time to get back to the basics.
Well, I must say goodnight here and remember to read this post over first thing tomorrow a.m. for errors as I am drifting off as I type....... Nite!

Bad Start to A Gorgeous Day

Not mine, but someone's.
On its roof

Check out those skid marks
The Other Car

I took these from the 18th floor. This happened at the corner of Fort Pitt Blvd. and Stanwix Street, oh, about 8:30 a.m., give or take a few.  Thankfully, I had crossed that street about an hour before (lots of paperwork, needed to start early).  I'm not sure what happened. Rumor has it that a driver ran the light and/or that a driver was on a cell phone and failed to see they had a red light. I don't know if anyone got hurt.  I would imagine there had to be a few bumps and scratches.

Anyhoo, it's Friday!!! TGIF!! Is it 5:00 o'clock YET????????

These two girls have been best friends forever. Seriously.
Ever since Kai was born eight months after K. That was 12 1/2 years ago.
Getting K to let me take her photo is tough. Luckily, Kai is usually in agreement and then K joins in. Of course, the promise of ice cream or Starbucks helps.
Their perfect summer is coming to a close as school begins tomorrow.

I love the playful looks, I love the serious looks.

Bello! Bello!

The Engagement Party

Saturday, I hosted an engagement party for my son and his bride-to-be.

My son, his bride-to-be, and a new addition to our family
I have never known my son to be so happy. Well, maybe that Christmas he got a Star Wars At-At. Hmm, maybe not.
Okay, just one more.

A family only party so that the two factions could meet.  I measure the success of my parties by the food that is left over and at what time the last guest(s) leave, and by that measure, I think this party was a success.  I know I enjoyed the laughter, the children, the stories, the food, and just spending the afternoon with my present and future family. K and Mom helped (my go-to people).  My only regret, beside Amanda not being there (she was chaperoning a group of teens up at Hershey Park for the weekend) was that I got so caught up in the moment that I didn’t take pictures of the party guests.

The menu was simple, penne and palpette, salad, Italian bread and an awesome garlic butter, cucumbers with a cool cucumber dip, crackers and chips with a bacon dip and a ranch dip.  Angel food cake topped with cool whip and strawberries.  The centerpiece was a collaboration between Mom and K.

Sunday was spent with Mom, K and Chloe.  We went to Eat n’ Park for breakfast, and/or lunch, whatever your fancy as we got there about 11:30.  Then we stopped at Michael’s, Giant Eagle, and back home.
I really didn’t see the girls much, they holed up in my bedroom hovering over the PC.  Can’t imagine what kept them so entertained and I really don’t think I want to know.  They were happy, giggling and eating lots of popsicles.
I watched Jumping the Broom, got caught up on my weekly shows and napped.  {sigh} it was a lovely weekend.
Next up: Planning a “Let’s Meet the Bridal Party” party.  And you know what that means?  Yep, a list!

Kayla had orientation yesterday.  She is heading up to the Jr. High.  Cammi had orientation last week.  Where has this summer gone???? The days are getting shorter, this I know, by the start times of the drive-in movies.  They are starting earlier each week.  [INSERT SAD FACE HERE].  I’m going to miss the mid-morning texts.  Ah, but we move forward.  Actually, my very favorite part of the year is coming up.  Fall, apple cider, the pumpkin farm, Thanksgiving, Christmas and a New Year.  That’s life, it’s always changing.  And speaking of changes. . .

Note to Self: she wants that hat
Amanda says K is reinventing herself (the HAIR).  Aren't we always???  Diets, hair color, face lifts, new clothes, etc., etc., etc.
When I left for the office this morning, it was gorgeous out! Sunny, blue skies!  Mid-morning a black cloud came through, followed by huge claps of thunder, lightning and rain. And then it passed and all is well again.
Busy weekend coming up.  Need to pick up K. Need to make meatballs and sauce. Need to do laundry, last minute clean up and prepare for the Engagement Luncheon for Jayme and Tina.  My family is growing!  Need to decide if we go to the drive-in this weekend or take a drive up to Ligonier on Sunday.  Hmmm..
Anywhooo, we may be busy, but life is good!

For the Wish List

The Front
The Bank
This 1950's cocktail dress.  It's divine!!! I came across this little number blog-hopping. Landed on Retro Chic Clothing.  It's price is £120. I have not a clue what that would be in American dollars.  I might not be able to afford it. Unfortunately, the "Contact Us" option is not available????, so this dress will have to stay on the List a little while longer while I do some sleuthing.
Thoughts go out to Dad that he passes his Stress Test with no stress.  Good luck Mom!
It is currently 72 degrees here in Pittsburgh and all is well. So far.

Did You Know. . .

. . . that NASA puts out a new photo/image of your universe every day?  It's fascinating (and educational).  You will find today's photo here.
The weekend went too fast.  I picked up K Friday, took her to the Doc's for her bruised wrist Saturday and later we met J&T and Cammi and Jade for an evening at the drive-in. As Jade is only 4 and totally into the Smurfs, that's what we saw, along with Zookeeper.  Zookeeper is an Adam Sandler film, not bad, great soundtrack.

Sunday - Bingo with Mom, Amanda, Melissa, and Janet. I love these girls. Fun afternoon.
Visit from the Mister.  He's fun. He's sweet, too. (Just what a guy wants to hear, huh?)
School will be in session soon.  The days are getting shorter (I know this from the drive-in start times). I am compiling my annual "Things I hope to to this Fall" list.
No photos cause K is on strike from having her photo taken. So, I'll just share more from our vacation.

I am still reading this book. It's good, I'm just slow

Why Document Your Day, Your Week, Your Life?

"but the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three on them sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4, and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in a hurry to get on to the next things: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less."

Welcome August!

Not really. This year is moving too fast. I don't like it.
K and I did find the drive-in on Friday. It was fun and we hope to go there again soon.
I did document the day and, time permitting, will upload the text + photos later.
Enjoy your day!
