Reading - It's Fundamental!!

Research done by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development at the University of Melbourne found that “The frequency of reading to children at a young age has a direct causal effect on their schooling outcomes regardless of their family background and home environment.”  You can read the result of their research here.   It’s pretty impressive stuff.  I love that it does not matter if you are rich or poor (no excuse for not having access to books – think libraries and those new adorable Little Free Libraries that are showing up on corners of residential areas ) as long as you read to your child or along with your child.

My Mom will read a book in a single evening.  I read – love books and magazines, but it takes me a bit longer.

My sons – they read, each having their favorite authors.

My daughter, well, give her a few Archie’s comic books and she’ll read.

My granddaughter, Cammi, she’s like my Mom. She is currently “into” the Dork Diaries.

As for my eldest granddaughter, Kayla, she brags about not reading.  ALL OF THE TIME.  Really?  You don’t read. . . EVER?????  Silly girl.  She “reads” at least 75 texts a day, responds to them, too.  Put a cereal box in front of her and she’ll read all print on it, ask what the lyrics are in a particular song and she’s on-line looking them up.  Buy the baby a couple of new Halloween books and tell her they are for bedtime, she’ll read.  And here is proof:

Ahhhhh, and here is Elliot.  Short attention span and always trying to eat the book.  Today we added two new books to his ever growing library - Fisher Price Little People Halloween is Here and a Mickey Mouse's Halloween Book.  I just love holiday themed books!! I hope Elliot does, too.

Happy reading!

Did I mention it's October??

It is.  It’s October and that means the farmer at Schramm Farms will be bringing the pumpkins down from the hillside for excited and happy little children to run through the pumpkin patch in search of that perfect pumpkin.  Tomorrow, the gang and I are meeting up and driving out the the pumpkin patch in search of our own pumpkins.  I really like Schramm's.  Not only do they offer a large variety of pumpkins (we were partial to the white ones last year), they also have a large corn maze to walk through and a smaller one for the kiddies, a fabulous bakery with tons of homemade goodies and a market with homegrown veggies.
I also equate October with chili.  Time to get out the Chili Bowl.  Thank goodness my family likes chili cause I sure do.  Red chili, white chili, hot, spicy, mild, its all YUM to me.  I love this month.  Not only is it gorgeous but there is a certain scent in the air - earthy.

Did September fly by or what??? I mean it FLEW by!! I am hoping that October slows down a bit, or maybe its me who needs to slow down.  My to-do list is like forever and I haven't even started.  But I plan to get really busy this month.  We shall see!

Enjoy your day!

Can I Get a Witness?

Today, I need a kickstart. Today, I need more caffeine. Today, I need more time off. Today, I need more energy.  Today I need more hours in the day.  Today, I need More. More. More.   Do you ever feel like you need to do something, anything, that there is something missing, amiss??  That's where I am right now and today I realized that my mini-trip is in exactly 60 days. That's 60 days starting today.  Sooooooooooo, because I need to be accountable to myself, this will be the start of my 60 days to Wonderful.  Wonderful being 60 days to a clean house, 60 days to lose 10 lbs., 60 days to move everyday, 60 days to create, 60 days to save $$ ( for a new pair of shoes for said mini-trip), 60 days to get that cholesterol below 200. Hmmm...

Now, I realize most people would choose a shorter period of time say, oh, I don’t know, 30 days, BUT, I am more of an underachiever.  Well, maybe that’s a little harsh, but I know me and I know how overwhelmed I feel under tight deadlines, and for me, 30 days is tight.  I can’t do that to myself if I want to succeed SO, 60 days it is.  Starting today. Like. Right. Now.

Welcome October!

Welcome October! Another one of my most favorite months.  I made a special trip to the grocery store last evening to pick up the fixings for chili.  Going to make a batch in the slow cooker this evening.
Our city, Pittsburgh, is in a frenzy! Lots of good stuff going on.  The Thursday Market Square Farmers Markets are still going strong and I've heard tell that there is a good chance they will be here through October 20th and back again in the winter months.
The Pirates have played SO WELL, like they haven't done in ages. There have been rallies in the Square and lots of black and gold clothing.  Tonight is a HUGE game for the Pirates and the Reds.
This week kicks off The Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts and The Rubber Duck Project has made its debut.  I'd like to take the kiddies down to see this huge (and cute) display.  You can check out the facts here.

There are at least four haunted houses opening this weekend as well as the pumpkin farms.  We've rounded up family to visit Schramm Farms this coming Saturday.
I am hoping that this month goes a tad slower than last.  There is so much I want to ENJOY about this month.
Until next time, enjoy your day!!!
